A Universal Studios talent scout discovered Spang in 1972 and offered him a seven-year contract. Spang appeared on The Streets of San Francisco, The Six Million Dollar Man, Happy Days, Charlie’s Angels, and Lou Grant under their banner. Spang also appeared in short films such as Short Walk to Daylight, Runaway!, and Sarah T. – Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic for television.
When her contract with Universal Studios was about to expire and she was facing bankruptcy, Laurette was cast as Cassiopeia in the original Battlestar Galactica TV series in 1978. She was only supposed to appear in one episode, but she ended up appearing in all of them throughout a season.
Following her success in the now-cult classic, Spang went on to star in a slew of other television shows, including The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Magnum, P.I.
She took a long break from acting in 1984 and remained out of the public eye for years, reappearing in 2007 in the indie horror film Plot 7. She hasn’t worked in the show business since the film. Spang appeared in Battlestar Galactica documentaries as a member of the original cast, including an extra feature for the show’s 25th anniversary DVD box set in 2003.
