Strictly's Amy Dowden is 'learning to accept new body and scars' on second honeymoon with husband Be

July 2024 · 5 minute read

Amy Dowden has explained how she’s ‘learning to accept her new body and scars’ during her second honeymoon with her husband Ben Jones.

The Strictly Come Dancing professional, 33, was told she had breast cancer in May 2023 and underwent a mastectomy before doctors discovered she was also battling another form of cancer and would need further treatment.

Amy, who tied the knot with Ben in 2022, found a lump in her breast the day before she flew to the Maldives for a belated honeymoon in April 2023, and admitted the holiday was ‘clouded by cancer diagnosis.’

After jetting off on holiday to Grenada, the dancer joined Lorraine Kelly for a segment on Tuesday’s programme in which she detailed how she was getting her ‘life back on track.’

Amy began: ‘The past year has been tough… cancer diagnosis, treatment, a mastectomy and some set backs but I’m determined to get my life back on track. Finally, we are honeymooning in Grenada!’

She added: ‘A totally different feeling from when we were on our honeymoon in the Maldives because you [Ben] didn’t know but obviously I had this cloud over me, I was present in my first honeymoon but I really wasn’t because I found the lump, I was hiding it from Ben.

‘Before coming to Grenada, last week I had seven appointments in one week so coming here and getting some Vitamin D, escaping hospital wards and appointments and medication is just gorgeous!’

‘I’ve got a new body, I’ve got scars, but I think it’s something that I’ve got to learn over time I’m going to accept, it’s not going to just happen overnight.

I’m being put into situations that I wasn’t at home, having to put a bikini on, being all exposed in summer wear than at home wrapped up in jumpers, jeans and boots. Hopefully it’s only going to get progressively better!’

The dancer announced she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in an Instagram post shared in May 2023 and underwent a mastectomy in July.

Since then Amy has shared regular health updates on Instagram. She battled sepsis at one point during her chemo treatment as well as a blood clot on her lung.

She also broke her foot toward the end of the year and her chemotherapy and then the injury meant Amy was forced to sit out most of the 2023 series of Strictly and was not partnered with a celeb.

She did make a number of appearances during the series though, including an emotional moment in the finale group dance.

Amy recently shared that her hair has started to regrow after chemotherapy and admitted she is feeling more positive amid her breast cancer battle.

Last week, the Strictly professional gave an update on Instagram after taking a short break from social media.

She told how although she is happy her hair is growing back she is still adjusting to a new pace of life this year and needed some days away after more hospital tests.

The star, who underwent her last bout of chemo eleven weeks ago after being diagnosed with breast cancer in May last year, posted new pictures and video of herself online after ‘being a little silent’ online.

Amy showed off her new head of hair and her eyebrows and lashes from different angles and thanked fans for their support.

She told them in a first post: ‘Hey hey, thank you for all the lovely messages the last few weeks. Sorry for being a little silent here. I needed a little time and space.

‘I’m still missing and craving what I should be doing but starting to accept I need to be patient. After a crazy week of hospital tests and apts last week Ben and I then went away for a few days and it’s exactly what we both needed.’

She added: ‘Hope 2024 has been treating you all well. Once again thanks for all the love and of course I need to remind you, have you checked yourself yet this year? If not get checking.’

Amy then showed off her hair regrowth from different angles and said: ‘Also so grateful for the hair growth so far. My eye lashes and brows are back and the hair is growing.

‘This is for anyone going through treatment. ‘Remember like I keep telling myself this too shall pass. This is 11 weeks since my last chemo.

‘To now… can’t believe it. The re growth felt so slow but looking back it’s unreal and it’s helping me feel more positive.’
