Kraft Heinz is recalling about 83,800 cases of processed cheese after customers complained of choking on cheese slices that had plastic stuck to them.
The company said in a Tuesday recall notice that a temporary problem had developed with one of its wrapping machines, making it possible for a “thin strip of the individual film” to remain on the cheese after its wrapper has been removed. “If the film sticks to the slice and is not removed, it could be unpleasant and potentially cause a gagging or choking hazard,” the company wrote.
The recall came after the company received an unspecified number of complaints from customers who had gagged or choked on the cheese. There were no injuries or deaths and the faulty machine was fixed, the company said.
“Kraft Heinz is committed to upholding the highest safety and quality standards and apologizes for this inconvenience,” it said in a statement.
