Wells went to Muncie Central High School and after matriculation enrolled at Ball State University, also located in his hometown. There, Bonzi was a standout in his team, leaving his mark on the Mid-American Conference with all-time career records in points with 2,485, and 347 steals, which earned him several recognitions including MAC Player of the Year in 1996, and 1998, and three times First-team All-MAC, consecutively from 1996 until 1998.
Following a successful college career, Bonzi was selected in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons as the 11th pick overall, but he was immediately traded to the Portland Trailblazers for their first-round pick from the next year’s draft.
Unfortunately, the Blazers were stacked with small forwards during Bonzi’s rookie season, so he played in only seven games, contributing to the team with only 4.4 points per game. He had his best season in Portland in 2001-2002, when he played 74 games overall, 69 of which were starts, and averaged a career-high 17.0 points per game, along with 2.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. In 2003 the Blazers got into playoffs and Bonzi set the record for most points scored by a Portland Trailblazers player in the postseason, with 45 points in a match against the Dallas Mavericks.
However, after the season ended, Bonzi got into some legal troubles, and 13 games into the new season, he was sent to the Memphis Grizzlies.
In his first season with the new team, Bonzi played in 59 games, 17 of which were starts, and averaged 12.3 points, 1.2 steals and 1.8 assists per game. He stayed one more season at Memphis, recording similar numbers, after which he was sent to the Sacramento Kings, for which he played during the 2005-2006 season and was used primarily as a rebounder, posting a career-high in rebounds with 7.7 per game. After the season ended, Bonzi declined the offer from the Kings for a five-year contract worth $38 million, and signed with the Houston Rockets, for two years, with a player option for the second year. In the first season, he earned $2 million, unfortunately, at the start of the season, he got into dispute with the head coach Jeff Van Gundy, and his playing time was limited. He eventually played in 28 games with 21.1 minutes per game, averaging just 7.8 points per game, his career-low.
He played for the Rockets until February 2008, when he was traded to the New Orleans Hornets in a three-team deal involving the Memphis Grizzlies as well; he played 22 games for the Hornets before his contract expired, and the front office decided not to extend his stay.
Bonzi felt that there was still basketball in him, and signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but wasn’t good enough to make the team, and was cut off before the season’s start.
He continued his career in China, playing for the Shanxi Zhongyu of the Chinese Basketball Association, which also added to his wealth. In his debut he recorded a double-double with 48 points and 11 rebounds, however, his contract was terminated in February 2009, as he didn’t return to the team after the Chinese New Year break. Several months later, he signed with the Puerto Rican team Capitanes Arecibo, further increasing his wealth, before finally retiring.
Regarding his personal life, Bonzi tends to keep his most intimated details hidden from the public eyes, though he is reputed to still be single, but has fathered three children. His nickname Bonzi, originated from his mother’s bonbon obsession during pregnancy, and he was called bonbon until he was two years old, and then it was shortened to Bonzi, which has stuck until the present day.
According to most recent news, Wells suffered a heart attack on 28th September, but after a successful surgery, he has apparently managed to recover completely.
He has been heavily involved in the community, and Roy C. Buley Community Center named its gymnasium in his honor, now named Bonzi Wells Gymnasium.
